McEwen. lion, secretary of the Wairarapa Club, in a letter to the writer, states that the railway department has agreed to put on a late tram (leaving .Uastcrtou at 5.30 p.m.) on Monday .January 24th. to suit the convoiu-, ence oi hm Wellington swimmers attending the club's gala. Everything so far is going well and all that is wanted to make tno affair a success are liu„e entries. Judging by the piizee the entries this year should cicato a I WELLINGTON CLEB. The programme just issued by the. Wellington club of events to bo deeded during the remainder of the present season is of a lengthy and interring na- ( turci. A noticonblo innovation,, and one that calls for hearty approval, is the inclusion in the programme ot a number , of events for B grade _ swunmera (those whose best time lor oO yards is 3feeo or over). This system has been m Se e Christchurch for some years and has had the effect of greatly improving tie younger swimmers, who, it asKea to compete in the same events as the cronies often become disheartened. ln'cluded in the programme also are a number of events for junior members (boys under sixteen years pt age), ipr which no entrance fee will be charged. Tho programme is as follows January 12th. 50 yards. Class B; January 13th, 50 yards junior; January 21st, 50 yards, 'nil members (first distance for presa'dent's oup); January 2Sth, 100 yards, all members (second distance for president a cup): February 4th, 150 yards, all members (third distance for president & cup); February 9th, 220 yards, all members (first distance for Missen cup); February 10th, diving, all members; February 23rd, 50 yards. Bodge, who fund suffered through Atkinson swimming across ham, being some little distance away. In the last twenty yards Bodge mode a brilliant effort, and, catching Brightling ten yards from home, he won by two yards, Brightling beating Bull by a yard for second place. Time, 67sec. 'The one mile Ferrier handicap attract,ed fourteen, competitors, and provided an excellent contest. The result being: f-L. Hales (Addington). simin. 1; P. Hill (Feudalton). simin, 2; P. Schwartz (Addington), smm, 3. E. H. Bailey scr. W. .•Manhire scr, H. Eioh Imin, C. Atkinson 11;ain, A. Hyslop 4min, A. M. Bussell ■l’:n n, Xj, Annand limiu, G. Gemmell 5 min. It- B. Dodge lijniin, A. G. Sanderson fiimiTt, and L. Poison also started. ■The course comprised twelve laps of 3.4oyds 2ft. At the end of the second Jap Sanderson was just dear of Dodge nnd Poison, while Hales and Hill wore swimming well together. Of • the backmarkers who started after the limit men ill ad completed two laps Kick, was going (best, rapidly overhauling Atkinson. (Ballay retired after going 220 yards and (PjeVi continued to improve his position, gather more than maintaining his distance from Manhire. There was little change in the positions of the loaders (before 600 yards had been covered, except that Schwartz was gaining a little /and Gemmell and Annand were swimming well together, thirty yards behind ihim. With half the journey covered, Sanderson had a lend of 15 yards from (Hales afid Hill, who had overtaken. Poison and Dodge and were ten yards m front of them, while Schwartz was next 15 yards away. Russell was just leading ,Eioh. who was gaining a, little on Manhire. Atkinson and Hyslop hod retired, *md in the next quarter of a mile Poison Dodgo and Russell ail went out. Hales and Hill had passed Sanderson, .while Schwartz was gaining on him, and ■Rich'' was steadily improving his position. At the end of the tenth lap. about 300 yards from home. Hales and Hill ■were still together, 25 yards in front of Schwartz, and Sanderson, who had apS eared to be tiring rapidly, dropped out. cmiacll was about BO yards away from Schwairtz. and Rich was almost alongside him. Schwartz pained a little on (tho leader* in the last lap but one, but ■Hales and Hill turned for home nearly twenty yards in front of him. The leadors fought out every inch of the last ■hundred yards, and twenty yards from .home Hales began his final effort. Hill responded gamely, but Hales, a rather strange* swimmer, maintained a great pace, and won by a yard and a half. Schwartz, who had put in very creditable work in the last hundred yards, was barely ten yards away. Rich finished up a meritorious swim by getting •into fourth place, 70 yards behind Schwartz. Rich was followed some sixty yards away by Gemmell, who bent Annrmd bv twenty yards, and Manhire, the ■lnst to' finish, was B 0 yards further away. Ti me __3omin 52 2-Ssec. G, Morpeth, Iron. treasurer of ch© Wellington Club, has returned to town, after a short holiday at Paekakarild. The Wellington. Club will decide a 50yds handicap for B grade swimmers on Wednesday, January 12th. Entries are now invited. The Swifts Club invites entries for a

Patterson, the smart young Swifts Club swimmer, has returnee to W eilinglou from a trip to Auckland and Rotorua. He is swimming splendid!} at present, and not a few consider win more than u match for tire Ihorndon Club sprinter, C. Brice. Beaurepaire has been putting up some good times in training recently, and in the HO yards succeeded ia putting, «d the excellent time of Sniin 25 --nsec, which is only 5 3-ssoc outside Ivtcran . world's record. This shows what an exceptionally fust mlui he is. ami the fine prospects ahead of him for the Olympian Caines at Athens in Jiaich next. At the carnival of the Lyttelton Pirates Club on Saturday last the Lyttelton schoolboys’ 100yds championship resulted i-G. Whithorn (West Lyttelton , 1; H. Whithorn was in front all the way am. had a fairly easy win. Time, Hum 3<sce. A meeting held at the Melbourne To-.,: Hall recently for the purpose of raisin■: funds to send young Beaurepaire to Athens, and presided over by the Lord Mayor, was ftiirly successful, and tinhopes of the V.A.S.A. to raise sufficient funds seems likely to be fulfilled. Aue tra.Ua could not have a better representative (says " Sporting and Dramatic News"), and seeing lie is a Victoria:, the bulk of the money required should be found here without difficulty. The wearing of coloured cups by competitors in race's was successfully ;n----augurated in Melbourne recently. Tinassociation’s idea is that each swimmer shall wear a coloured skull cap cone spending to the colour set against his n'amo in tiro programme. This enables the onlooker to pick out the man leading at a glance, 'and also assists the judges materially where a close finish occurs. The plan is to be followed at the Australasian championships meeting, and will doubtless be much appreciated by the spectators, who will he apprised of tho winner by the hoisting of a flag of tho corresponding colour.
