MAXIMHM KBNAI/TY ON A THIRD OFFENDER. VEEBB ASSOCIATION. ASHBURTON. January 7. Richard NoaJon, boardinghousekeeper at Ashburton, was to-day fined the maximum penalty of £SO on a charge of keeping liquor for sale in the no-license district, of Adhburton. Nealon had twice previously' been’convicted of sly ’ grog-selling within the last five years, but the Magistrate (Mr •V. G. Day) upheld, counsel’s contention that ’as the licensing district of Ashburton had. since the last, convictions •undergone .a change in its boundaries, ■and is not now . identical - with the licensing district in which the previous offences were committed, they oould not be taken into consideration in fixing ' a penalty. Imprisonment was thus avoided.
