CONCILIATION COUNCIL TO BE SET UP. TWENTY-FOUR SHILLINGS PER HUNDRED REFUSED. Now that the slaughtermen have ex-’ pressed their , determination to adopt extreme measures, it Las hem decided to sot up a Council of Concilmtioaii to mako recommendations by which it is hoped—notwithstanding the tin eats made—that a settlement, will be arrived at. The Slaughtermen s Federation. having failed to appoint two assessors to represent it on tho council Mr P. Hally, Conciliation Commissioner, will appoint two■ - parsons to act on the Federation s behalf on the Conciliation Council. Tims procedure is in accordance with the provisions of the Arbitration Act. Thi© conned will ho sot up during to-day and. will almost immediately proceed to consider tho merits of the dispute. «, It is felt in employers circles that tho mediation of tho Council of Conciliation will have little effect in settling the dispute if the men persist in° their demands for 25s per 100 for the killing of lambs sheep. A conference which lias to_ consider a demand of such nature it is felt is hound to prove abortive. ’ A large meeting of slaughtermen ’from the Gear Meat, Company’s works was held at Petene on Thursday evening to bear this report of delegates who were appointed to meet the employers during the day and discuss the ■position with' theni. . The delegates reported that the company had offered an increase on. the present killing, rate, to 24s per 100 (Is less than the mien , ate demanding). Tile offer did not prove accepte.Me-.to the meeting, which almost unanimously ‘rejected it. THE POSITION IN AUCKLAND. PRESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, January 7, The Slaughtermen’s Federation having decreed that each one of the affiliated unions shall ■ demand ’’an increased rate of pay, similar to .that now being demanded by the Wellington Slaughtermen's Union,' the local union this morning notified tho Auckland Farmers' Freezing Company of its intention to ■ask for this increase. The union also asked the management to receive a deputation from, tho union so that the matter may ho freely discussed. CONFERENCE IN CHRISTCHURCH ON TUESDAY. CHRISTCHURCH, January 7.
