LAWN TENNIS

WELLINGTON HANDICAP TOTJENAMENT.

P. B. WEIGHT WINS THE CHIEF EVENT.

The concluding stages of the Wellington Provincial Lawn Tennis Association's tournament eventuated on the Day's Bay courts yesterday under most favourable circumstances.

It was generally anticipated that Wright and Jones would Toe the finalists in the first-grade singles, but Lewis, who has been playing up to his old forai during the tournament, defeated the latter after a very even contest. Wright proved, too good for the Newtowner in the final, although at one stage lie wis was leading at 35—34. On changing over Wright won 7 out of 10 on his service, and led 41—36. From that stage ho always held the upper-hand. George Lauclilan annexed th? secondgrade singles after a close tin ism with the Trina'ty Church youngster \V. Crewes—the" latter conceding his victor 7 points. He caught up hie handicap and led by half-a-dozen at another stage, but Lauchlan's experience in inter-ciub matches, .when representing Brougham Hill some seasons ago, stood him in good stead, and he won 60—57. - Miss D. Atmore and Miss V. Curtis (two girls in their teens) met in the final of the Ladies' Singles. The Petone girl was unable to give her opponent the necessary 11 points, the respective handicaps being 25 and 14—so Miss Atmore had another, comfortable win, 50— 42, which was the closest score in any of her five games —a fair, indication that the handicappers let her in very ligiTciy. Jeffery and Lewis, after disposing of Jones and Clarke in an exciting finish (70—68) after the latter pair led 65—62, had very little difficulty in running right through to.the final of the Man's 1 Doubles, no others reaching CO. Here they met McLean and Paterson, the scratch men, but mainly by a .ineritorioxis exhibition on .Teffery's part, • the Wellington men were totally outclassed, Jeffery and Lewis, winning 70—46. Miss V. Curtis was a factor in another final, she and Miss Walters, on 12. carrying off the Ladies' Doubles after a vantage game with the scratch pair, Misses J. Scott and K. Mcintosh. The younger players appeared to have victory assured at 59—53 (which they reached by sound play as their opponents almost caught them in the forties), but the Collegians made a, big finishing effort, and the winning ace was not/**"? 611 until deuce had been called .twice. Misses Cnrtis and Walters winning 62 —6O, a very popular win. H. Fathers and Miss Printeen had. a very easy passage, with their big handicap of 28 right through the combined the final included.. The to.rnxer has a strong serywe, and is fair at the net, backed up by plucky play on his little Partner's account. Thj£ pair won thT finaXra-50, -against Dave Isaacs and. Miis J. Scott (who had to concede tf£n 13-15 to 28), after J»£ffg ° f their olub-mates,. Crewes and his sister, in the preceding round (the semifinal). . ' Details are as under:— MEN'S SINGLES (First.
