RIFLE-SHOOTING.

E. J. KING AGAIN VICTORIOUS. PRIVATE TURNER VOLUNTEER CHAMPION. PRIVATE A. B. JOPLTN JUNIOR. CHAMPION. By winning ■tine Opon Championship of the Wellington 'Garrison Rifle Assooiaifcion's second annual prize meeting at Trentlham yesterday,. ex-New Zealand Champion R. J. King, of the Opakli Riflo Club, proved once again lias powers of endurance a<nd consistency—adding one more victory to his long list of district championships. King is one of the hardest nuts to crack in the riflo shooting world of Now Zealand. Ho is to be found at practically every rifle meeting in the North Island, and is one of the most consistent shots in the Dominion. When shooting concluded on Saturday—the first day of the meeting—King was one point behind F. Wilkio (Upper Hutt), who was leading for senior honours. His first shoot yesterday morning (ten shots at GOO yards) yielded a useful 43, which placed him at the head of the aggregates along with H. Marshall, of Karori, botli men having a total of 197, Wilkio dropping back a few points. At the end of the nexlt stage (10 shots nt 900 yards) King was still leading by ono point, Wilkie again making up lost ground and lying second with 234. The last stage—lo shots at 1000 yards —nearly proved the undoing of King, w7'o dropped seventeen points over this* difficult distance, only scoring 33 out of a possible 50. The range, how- I ever, was itoo hard for the majority of the competitors, and when the aggregates were finally compiled King was found to be leading by the narrow margin of ono point, with Private A. E. Turner, of _ the City Rifles, second, ono point behind. Turner being tbo highest volunteer scorer in tbo Wellington Garrison, wins the Association's Champion Belt, which he will held for one yoar. while takes the Open Championship gold medal presented by.

ship, but -'iio could not get on sufficient, points ub 1000 yards, <and suffered defoat by 'the narrow margin of threo points. Ttiflomaji F. Wilkio, who was leading at the conclusion of tihe first clay's '.shooting, "cracked up" at 1000 yards < but finished only one point boh.i7.7d King and level with Private Turr.'/er. I.'do Junior Championship proved a ru'uatvay victory for Private A. B. an eighteein-year-old member of J tf'Ae Civil Service Rifles. His score 'ras 244—eijrlit points ahead of the runners-up (Rifleman Kemp, of Karori, /and Private H. D. Smith, of tho Post I and Telegraph Rifles), who compiled

236 each. Bugler Ballanger, of the Nelson College, spoilt ibis chances, which were excellent, by failing to find the target at 900 yards, whore ho registered a possible of misses. It was hard luck for. tiho lad, w\ho mode an excellent showing in oil the other events. The Opa.ki Club scored another victory by winning the five men team match, the Karori Club being second. The scores respectively were 1267 and 1232. The Kaiapoi Woollen Company's special trophy—a valuable rug—for the highest score at 900 and 1000 yards was

won by Rifleman J. B. Mcl/achlan, Petone, with a total of 79 out of a possible 100; while Mr H. Marshall's trophy (allotted to the highest aggregate scorer in the Championship series Who had never won a prize at any rifle meeting) fell to Rifleman A. TV. Kemp, of the donor's own olub. Rifleman. H. Marshall won tho Licensed Victuallers' Onp for compiling the highest aggregate hi matches 2,3, 4, and 5. The Young Soldiers' Challengo Cup Competition was postponed till a future date. THE SHOOTING. Very little need be said of .yesterday's shooting, as the events were all one range matches —with the exception of No. 4 which was.aU but oompleted on Saturday—and the score lists appended speak for themselves. The wind throughout the clay was very changeable. At 600 yards the variation rougblv was from "dead in" to ten degrees'left, while at 900 and 1000 yards, it changed from eight or nine left to five right. The scoring was in consequence very poor over tho long ranges, misses' being ns frequent as bull's-eyes. There were several possibles of misses; and quite a number of marksmen did no better than ''"break their duck." As an indication of tho

extreme ra-rds ,fcion at 1000 yards, the folloiving sco - res are appended:— Pvt. Turner 5445054505—37 Rflm. R. ... 5445445330—37 Rflmn. H . Marshall ... 4335524432—35 Kflrnn. Ye. J.
