TO-DAY'S HOLIDAY

There will he no lack of diversion for those who are fortunate enough to have a holiday to-day. .The chief in the city is the spring carnival of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Club, to bo held on the Basin Eeserve. This promises to be easily one of the best sports meetings of the season. In connection with the meeting the Wellington Centro of the N.Z.A.A.A. is holding a Marathon race from the Basin to Taita and back—a distance of 26 miles 355 yards. _ For this race a fine entry has been received, and amongst the runners will bo Hill, the winner of the Auckland Marathon, and W. F. Simpson, the veteran crosscountry champion of New Zealand. His Excellency the Governor, the Prime Minister, and other Ministers will attend. ■ _ . Turf enthusiasts will have their choice of the Carterton meeting or the Miramar tiony gathering. Sailors will ho attracted by the opening of the Port Nicholson Yacht Club’s season. There will be a frequent ferry service to Day’s Bay, and at Miramar Wonderland will be open to those who enjoy the excitement of the water-chute and the helter-skelter. Those who may contemplate \a quiet day’s outing can rely upon spending a pleasant hour or two in going over the famous sylvan retreat of the Hutt Valley, known as Mason’s Gardens, Taita, which is an ideal summer resort and popular picnicking ground. Hot water can be obtained free, whilst admission costs only sixpence.'
