RUGBY FOOTBALL.

WELLINGTON TO USING TEAM. SOUTHLAND DEFEATED. n?E£S ASSOCIATION*. INVIvRCARGILL, September 8. In a fast, exciting game the Wellington football team to-day beaii Southland by IS points to 5. Wellington had nil the best of the first, spoil, but Southland had the advantage ip. tho .second half. Tho. Wellington forwards went off at a great pace from the start, and, playing wit’n n slight advantage in regard to wind, at once had Southland on the defensive. The Southland forwards, though not as clever as the visitors in the loose and in handling tho ball, held choir line and scrum. Tho Wellington pack played continuously to tho hacks, and tho latter throw the hall about with great freedom, just missing two or three scoring chances. From tho kick off Baird (Southland's fast wing three-quarter) got to the Wellington full-back, kicked and got to tho ball with no one in sight. But an unexpected bounce lost him the ball and the chance. Wellington again went to the attack, and Green got through all tho forwards with a trickv run, passed to Wilson and he to Mitchinson.- The last-named sent the ball to Evenson, who scored at tho corner. The kick at goal failed. The visiting ’ backs continued to throw the ball about, but tho defence was_ stubborn till Green passed to McKenzie,’ who scored just as he was tackled at tho corner. Again tho kick failed. Almost immediately from a centring kick by Evenson. the Southland backs mulled tho ball badly 'and Green, following fast, snapped up and scored at tho posts, a try only redeemed from being a present to Wellington by the cleverness with which the visiting half fielded a very awkward ball to handle. Evenson sent tho ball. between the posts, but it was touched by an opponent. Tho rest of the # spell was marked by a sudden awakening of the Southland forwards, who just failed to score from loose play. In the second spell the home team did most of the offensive t w6rk. They went hard away from the jump in solid forward rushes, but inaccurate handling by the backs threw fine chances auav. From free kicks the home team haeftwo kicks at goal, just outside the twenty-fire, both failing. Then tho Southland forwards, hy close sweeping rushes and solid line play, got right to the goal line, where the visitors saved hy heeling over and forcing. The home forwards came away with a rush nearly half th© length of tho ground to near the line, where Grant (five-eighths) fielded, ran to'tho line, and passed to Glasgow, who scored behind tho posts. Glasgow converted. Baird again broke through for Southland, kicked over Cunningham’s head, and had a neck-and-neck race with : Mitchinson to tho line. The • Wellington' man managed to get the ball first. Close forward plriy from a lino out carried the ball across the ground, and Southland were given a'■free jkick for a scrum. infringement, hut an easy kick missed. The home team kept hammering away-till their full-back let them down badly and changed the. whole completion of .the game. With a. good chance to return a long saving kick he sent tho ball feebly into the hands of Bruce, who ran over at the posts and scored tho softest try. . M.itchmson kicked a goal. Southland continued without dash, and tricky play by Green kept them defending, when Walsh sent up a score by potting a neat left-foot goal. Again the home team roused themselves, and for the remainder of the spell atttacked, but could not break’ down tho defence. There was no further score.
