CITY COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. Tho AYellington City Council met last evening. Present:—Tho Alayor (Dr A. K. Newman), and Councillors Luke, Smith, Cohen, Ballinger, Frost, Trevor, Atkinson, Devine, Fitzgerald. Carmichael, Shirtcliffe, Fletcher, and, Alorrah. FINANCE AND PROPERTY.

Tho Finance and Property Committee recommended and it was decided :

That an application bo made for the unconditional exemption of Hay street from the provisions of section 117 of, the Public AVorks Act, 1003. That the cement testing machine offered for sale to the City Engineer for (lie sum of £2O f.0.b., Auckland, be mirohased.

That an offer of £3OO for the right to connect, with tho drain that serves Diraock and Co. and Banks’ Meatl Company for tho drainage of the municipal abattoir, and to nay half cost of upkeep of that portion of tho dram winch would serve Uio corporation, bo made to Dimock and Co. That tho refuse from Lambton and Thorudon railway stations be removed upon payment of an annual sum of X 7. That two applications for - drainage on deferred payment be granted, the applicants being without funds. That repairs bo carried out to the Mangatainoka river protective works at an estimated cost of £SO, as recommended by the City Engineer. That the council appoint an extra, ranger for six months-CY-LAAVS, FIRE BRIGADE AND LIGHTING.

Tho By-laws, Firo Brigade and Street Lighting Committee recommended, and it was agreed;—

That the application of Air George AVuider for permission to erect temporary partitions in his Manners street, shop be granted, provided that he enters into an undertaking to remove them at the end of six months, or re-erect them in brick and altoa building in accordance with tho by! laws. That tho steps and surface of the thorouglifaro at the private way leading from North street to Barked street be put in order. That accounts be forwarded to the Government departments using lire alarm call points for tho sum of £2 2s per annum.
