Captain Waller, of tho HuddartParker Company's Wimmera, which arrived at Gisborne on Saturday, reported to tho local agent that the Tuahiue light was out. Tho weather (says the "Herald") was very thick and dirty, and he especially kept ever expecting to see the light, which, would have enabled him to make his way into the bay, and have been of -rent service, as tho steamer arrived off the bay at i a.m. The explanation is that until tho light has beou thoroughly tested it has been screened in with canvas, there being a slit in the canvas towards Wainui to enable a resident in that locality acting on behalf of the Public Department to observe whether it is still burning. Until the light’s period of probation is passed it will not be uncovered, the Marine and Public Works Department taking this precaution lest shipping should be misled through nny accidental failure of the illuminant, which, bewever, is not anticipated.
