MR ALLAN M’DOUGALL.
Mr Allan McDougall, M.A., the New Zealand Rhodes scholar for 1909, leaves Wellington for London to-day by the lonic. His . career at Home will bo watched with interest by his late fellow students of Victoria College. Mr MoDougall is twenty-three years of age. Ho was born of British parents in tho Island of North Uist, Inverness-shire, Scotland, and came out to Wellington with his parents fourteen years ago. His home has been here since that time. From 18S5, tho year of his arrival in Wellington, until 1899, ho attended the Terrace school.. In 1900 he went to Wellington Co.lcge, where he remained until the end of 1903, and had much success in his class-work. Ho ♦won eleven prizes and throe scholarships, passed the Junior
Civil Service and tho matriculation examinations and gained credit in the "University scholarship examination. His record while there’shows that in 1900 he won the junior Turnbull scholarship, in 1901 he gained the senior Turnbull scholarship, first prizes in English and Latin, special prize for English composition and the Liverton History special prize. The year following he secured another special* prize for English composition, and was bracketed equal for the Barniooat memorial special prize for literature. In his last year at the college ho won his third special for Eng-, llsh composition, the Barnicoat memorial special for literature, a first in English and tho second Rhodes scholarship. He passed to Victoria College at the beginning of 1904. During his first year ho kept terms in senior English, -Latin and French, in each of which he secured a first prize. He kept terms in tho same subjects during the following year, and
again gained three firsts. In mathematics ne was placed third. At the end of 1906 he gained his B.A. degree in,English, Latin, French, mathematics, jurisprudence and constitutional history, and also carried off a first prize in French and a third in jurisprudence and, constitutional history. He obtained his M.A, degree with first-class honours in English and French at the end of 1907, and upon the result of his honours examination there was awarded, to him in 1908 the Jacob Joseph scholarship. He is a good all-round athlete. Previous New Zealand winners of the Rhodes scholarship are; —1904, James Allan Thomson (Otago University); 1905, P. W. Robertson (Victoria College); 1906, Robert Alexander r-arquaharson (Otago University); 1907, Colin M. Gilray (Otago University); 1908, Solomon N. Ziman (Auckland Univarsity College).
