BUDGET CONTROVERSY.
FREE TRADE LEAGUE LONDON COMMITTEE FOR PROPAGANDA WORK. LAND TAX AMENDMENTS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright LONDON, July 13. A “ City of London Free Trade Committee JJ has been formed for propagancla purposes, irrespective of party. Lord Avebury (formerly Sir John Lubbock) has been elected chairman. Lords Brassey, I'irrio, and George Hamilton, Sir Felix Schuster, Sir George Gibb, Sir Edgar Speyer, and many merchants and bankers are among the members of the new organisation. Sir John Dickson-Poynder, Conservative member for Chippenham, has withdrawn from the Budget League on the ground that the Government’s amendments to the Finance Bill are only making tho proposed land taxes more unworkable.
Several Ministerialists, hold that Mr Lloyd-George’s promise to exclude small holdings proves that the increment tax is no longer based upon principle.
