PALMERSTON NOTES. ruou OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. PALMERSTON, July U. The Hon. T. Mackenzie has notified the Beautifying Society that he will have a report made in connection with Mount Wharito as a scenic reserve.

A rather interesting football match was played this afternoon on the sports ground between teams representing the carriers and the cabmen of Palmerston. There was a fair crowd of onlookers, cabs and espressos being placed at the disposal of spectators to travel to and from the grounds free. The proceeds of the "gate*' are to be handed to All Saints Children's Home. After paying expenses it is expected there will be about .£5 to the good. An excellent game resulted in a win for the carriers by 8 points to 7. The new lodge of the Protestant Alliance Friendly Society was opened in Palmerston last night. P.G.M. Bro. Seabrook presided over a large attendance. Eleven new candidates were initiated. Bro. Seabrook installed the newly-elected officers as follows:—W.M., Bro. J. A. Ritchie; D.M., Bro. D. Mitchell; secretary, Bro. Cox; treasurer, Bro. Donald; Elders, Bros. Howiok and Raeburn; 1.G., Bro. 0. Raeburn. The P.G.M. gave an interesting address on the duties and responsibilities of the officers.

Considerable interest was taken In the bicycle road race this afternoon, and a large number of people assembled to witness the finish, which resulted in a win for W. Lay, A. Schlager second, and G. F. Brady third. H. Hendereon pul up the fatost time. The Manawatu Coursing Club will hold the final meeting of the present year on August 17th and 18th. Mr J. T. Lang has presented the Manawatu Mounted Rifles with a Boer rifie, to be hung in their orderly room. ’ KAIEANGA COUNTY COUNCIL. At the monthly meeting of the Kairanga County Council the following wore present:—Councillors Voss (chairman), Anderson, Wllsher, Cailis, O'Loughlin, Bryant, Moody, Mayo, and Batchelar. I'he District Railway n/ngineer declined to allow another crossing at Cook street, Linton, and it was resolved to bring the matter under the notice of rhe Minister. The Oroua County Council applied for payment of .£3OO on account ot Gorge bridge. The amount was passed. Councillor Collis was appointed to deal with the application Of J. Galliohan for permission to erect a stab fence on a washout on the road joining his property. The Manawatu Drainage Board was granted permission to lower a culvert on Hughes line. The councillors for the Fitzherbert riding, the chairman, and the inspector were appointed to meet the Palmerston Borough in respect to matters in connection with the Fitzherbert bridge. No action• was taken regarding T. P. Faire'e request, that drains be cleaned out on Rangitikei line. The county roadmen wrote applying to have their wages paid fortnightly instead of monthly, but it was pointed out that this would entail a considerable amount of trouble to councillors, and it was decided the request could not bo acceded to. Councillor Bryant called attention to the fact that a settler had cut a drain across the Fitzherbert road to put a culvert in without authority, and wood cartels were doing great damage to the road by driving in the water table. Councillor Batahelar also called attention to 'damage being done to the road in his vicinity. The inspector was instructed to inquire into .Councillor Jiiyant's complaints, and to take action against tht oheuders if thought necessary, and the chairman and Councillor Bryant weie appointed to inquire into the other matters. The overseer's report was read and adopted. The clerk was instructed to inform Messrs Buick Bros, that they must repair Hamilton road, or the council would do the work at tneir expense.
