BACHELORS’ BALL AT MASTERTON

A BRILLIANT SUCCESS. The Exchange Buildings, Masterton, were on fete last evening, the occasion being a ball given, by thirty-five AVairarapa bachelors as a return to the ladies by whom they were recently entertained at the violet dance. Much pleasurable anticipation has been rife in the district for weeks concerning the event, but realisation surpassed the most sanguine expectations—in fact, the ball will stand In the social annals of tho town as on© of tho most brilliant ever given. Ail the arrangements were on a most elaborate scale, tho beauty and prodigality of the decoration© leavened i>y tne zeroise of much artistic taste, surpassing anything seen there for many a day. hopes of lycopodium and rose-pink cammeiias daintily festooned the wmte walls of the ballroom, and were crossed diagonally overhead, while the horsian-car-peted ante-rooms leading off to cunning-iy-contrived cosy corners, etc., were redolent with glorious masses of spring flowers, roses, jonquils, narcissi, and. violets being employed in one, while the second bore a charming pink scheme developed in rhododendrons,azalias, japouicas and palms. Into these bowers of beauty and fragrance the guests passed through avenues of mimosa hung with Chinese lanterns, up the carpeted stairway festooned with pink and crimson draperies, and along tho corridors. Splendid facilities for sitting out were also provided on the balcony and in several other directions. Supper, quit© an epicurean feast, was served downstairs on small tables adorned with graceful long stemmed rotee-pink cammelias disposed in crystal tubes and veiled with tine maidenhair, the flower© borrowing effect from the rose-pink shades of the candles, set in branening silver candelabra. The dressing was on the whole conspicuously smart, Mrs D. Caselberg and Mrs Mace received tho guests on behalf of the hosts, who had presented each with lovely bouquets tied with pink ribbon. Mrs Caselberg wore a trained gown of rose-pink satin charmeuse, the front of the corsage show-, ing soft folds of chiffon under a lovely little bolero of rose point lace, with gold fringes and soutache trimming; she added a burnous of turquoise-blue satin with hand embroideries. Mrs Mac© had black ninon over silk, the < corsage showing handsome gold embroideries and folds of gold tissue; a cream Spanish lace Josephine scarf finished the toilette. Mrs Charles Bharazya favoured a graceful gown of pale blue satin oharimeuse with Grecian, tunic drapery of cream net sequinned in gold, and a Grecian fillet of gold tissue'terminating in a long cream osprey, in her hair. Miss Moody's rose-pink crepe meteor© gown was finished with silver embroideries and touched with deeper toned velvet.: Mrs Vallance was superbly gowned in 'black Chantilly lace over white chiftfon and satin. Miss Eila Vallance, white dewdrop tulle with bands of diamante lace oyer satin, charmeuse. -.Miss Bidwill, pink satin with spangled tullo over dress. Mrs Hugh Beetham was in black soft satin, with raised white chiffon and silver applique. Miss Beetham, in pink satin charmeuse. Mrs Hugh Morrison (of Awatoitoi) wore Copenhagen blue chiffon taffeta, the corsage handsomely trimmed with and ininer folds of crepe d© chine. Miss Moira I Bennett, white chiffon taffeta. Miss Jackson, reseda-green satin charmeuse, 'with a large crimson crush rose on the corsage. Mrs Meredith wore rose-pink satin. Miss Jahey: Meredith, pale blue Liberty satin. 2&iss Payton, soft silk in pale eau du nil, toned with cream lace. Miss Sellar, white pailette silk, the corsage finished with soft folds of chiffon and lace. Mrs Buchanan, black silk with berthn of white lace. Miss Cormack, pale blue silk with Valenciennes lace sleeves. Miss Elaine West, emibroidered white ret over blue chiffon and pink silk. Mrs Laird Meredith wor©: her lovely bridal robe of rich white, satin. Miss Bussell, black net with seouinned bodice and crimson flowers. Miss Booth (Carterton), turquoise silk with large corsage cluster of flowers. Miss Woolf, yellow silk gown with bands of orange and touches of. black lace. Mrs Noble Campbell, white silk with junder-sleeves and tucker of drown tulle. Mrs Alfred Caselberg. black sequinned rob. Miss Kathleen Meredith, whit© satin, the corsage finished with lac© and touches of silver. Mrs Evans, turquoise!blue silk gown. Miss Bennett, -ivory chin©. silk patterned with large pink flowers.
