Mrs Hickcy, wife of Mr C. E. Hicfcej, well known as a representative Wellington cricketer, died last night alter a short illness. Mr and Mrs Hickey had only been married for eleven months, and their very large circle of fiends will hear of the young lady's ueathwith keen regret. She was the daughter ot Mr 11. A. Eversleigh, of Wellington. Miss.B. B. Macintosh, of Auckland, who has been in charge of. the cookery section under tho Blenheim Education Board for two and a half years, was appointed yesterday to be a cookery instructress under the Wellington Education fioard. Miss Macintosh, who was trained in the Auckland Technical School, secured a first-class City and Guilds of London certificate.

The Mayor, Dr Newman, took his seat on the Wellington Harbour Board yesterday for the first time. He was welcomed by tho chairman, Mr Wilfoi-d, who trusted that the City Council would, as in the past, continue to co-operate in any works undertaken for the benefit of' the port. Dr Newman; in acknowledgment, replied that he had no doubt tho City Council would be very glad to further the progress of the city in conjunction with tho Harbour Board. News has been received in Christchurch of the death in England of Mr Samuel Bealey, an ox-Superintendent of tho Province of Canterbury. Mr Bealey was born in Lancashire in 1821, entered 'Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took his B.A. degree; land sailed for New Zealand' in 1851. 'in .conjunction ■with a brother he bought 1000 aores of land, and went m for farming. in ■1852 he was oleoted one of <the Christ•ohuroll representatives on the first Provincial Council, and sat for the same constituency until 1863, when he was returned unopposed as Superintendent, in succession to Mr W. Sefton Moorjho'use. At the conclusion of his term of office he-retired into private life, and ■eventually left for England for the purpose of educating his family. He never returned to ithe colony, but two of his sous own the Haldon station, "near Hororata.

Two interesting ceremonies took place at the Young Men's Christian Association building last night, when Mr J. G. W. Aitkeu (president) gave a "social" to members and their friends in honour of Mrs M. A. Williams. In the presence of a large gathering he unveiled ai handsome brass tablet . let into a principal pillar of the entrance hall, commemorating the generosity of Mrs Williams in donating to the association the valuable piece of land on which the building 6tands. He said the gift was worth many thousands of' pounds, and Airs "Williams had been an exceedingly generous benefactor to more than one Wellington institution. It -was an investment which would bring its splendid return in thousands of young men saved for lives of usefulness and integrity, for this was how it would spell out. Mrs Williams waa present, and made a brief but very feeling reply to the unexpected honour. She received three hearty cheers. Mr "W. T. Holdsworth then presented to the association a, framed enlarged portrait of his father, the late Mr J. G. Holdsworth, who from 18! 0 until 1884 was the president. Mr Holdsworth stated that his father commenced the good' work at the. instance of Dr Somerville, and it was to be hoped that the association would have a still wider sphere of usefulness.. During the evening 'addresses were given illustrating the work of the Y.M.C.A. in its religious, physical, educational and social aspects, and an excellent musical programme waa rendered.
