MURDEROUS ATTACK ON AN AGED COUPLE.
__« Mr C. D. Hogan, an old settler at Reddestone (N.S.W.), was shot at and wounded by a half-caste Indian named Frederick iioswcll, and his aged wife was so brutally assaulted that her life is despaired of. UoSwell afterwards committed suicide. The half-caste had tea at Mr H6gan J s place, and at about 10 o'clock demanded money. This was refused, and the half-caste then drew an old revolver and fired at Mr Hogan. The bullet lodged in his face. A struggle ensued, and Mr and Mrs Hogan managed to got into an adjoining room and lock the door. After a time Mr Hogan crept through the window and went to a neighbour's for assistance. On his return he found that the door of the bedroom, had been smashed in and his wifo had been almost battered to death. Tho assailant escaped, but was found about four miles from the scene of tile outrage. He was dead, having committed suicide by cutting hits throat. Mr Ilogan was taken' to Glen Inties and operated' on. Mrs Hogan when tho last mail_ left Sydney was in a very critical state."
