The immigrants represent divers callings, but tradespeople predominate. EMPLOYMENT OF AN APPRENTICE NAPIER CASE DISMISSED NAPIEE, February 16. Mr McCarthy, S.M., gave judgment to-day in the case in which Father Goggan was charged with a breach q£ the painters' award in employing an apprentice without first employing a journeyman, and with failing to have an apprentice indentured. A boy named Cpnnoll, employed by Father Goggan doing odd jobs about the Presbytery, had been given painting work, which the union considered infringed the , award. The Magistrate ruled that Connoll was not an apprentice within the meaning of the award, and dismissed the case. VOLUNTEER DIFFERENCE SETTLED OAMARU, February 16. The differences existing in local official volunteer circles may now be regarded as ended, a committee having been instrumental in bringing about a settlement. The terms of settlement include a paragraph as follows:—"The committee and the officer commanding the battalion accept Captain Morris's assurance that in reporting certain alleged irregularities he was not actuated by unworthy motives." In the Supreme Court, in the case against AVilliam Fitzsimmons Ford, charged with robbery of jewellery from the shop of Pascoe, in Newton, Mr Justice Edwards said it was impossible, on the evidence, to convict the accused, who was discharged, and a direction was given for a prosecution on a charge of perjury of Terawhiti, the Maori who was alleged to have represented to Ford that he was in possession, of stolen rings. A DISPUTED ELECTION INQUIRY DEMANDED AT AUCK- • LAND ; AUCKLAND,'February 16. A petition was lodged in the Magistrate's Court this atternoon by Mr M. G. McGregor, as solicitor for Mr J. H. Bradney and six other ' shipowners, demanding an inquiry into the conduct of the recent Harbour Board election, when Messrs H. D. Heather, J. H. Gunson -and J. J. Craig were declared to have been elected as meinbers of the board by the payers of dues and shipowners, and when Mr Bradney was defeated by one vote. The; ipetitioners allege certain irregularities in the election, inasmuch as persons were allowed to vote who were not entitled to and certain others were allowed to vote by proxies. The petition will be heard before Mr Kettle, S.M., within the next fourteen days. DUNEDIN VALUATIONS _ AN INCREASE. DUNEDIN, February 16. Valuations for Dunedin city, including Caversharn and South Dunedin wards, show the ratable value of property to be .£420,720, an increase of ,£23,976 on last year.
