HOSPITAL BEQUESTS

MRS EMILY JANE BROWN'S PHILANTROPHY. THE BROWN-Mc WILLIAM MEMORIAL. Mrs Emily Jane Brown, who died at Auckland recently, left a bequest of A2UO to the Wellington Hospital Board to be utilised as a permanent memorial to the good work done in hospital work by her friend, the late Mrs Me William, of Otaki. The board received this sum, and it was decided to us© the money to endow a special bed in the Otaki Hospital for indigent Maoris, and also to erect an extra shelter for general use at the* “ Otaki Sanatorium. Mrs Brown also left the residue of her estate after final disbursements, etc. had been made, to the- Wellington Hospital Board under the same conditions as she had bequeathed Hie .£2OO. From the residue the board anticipate receiving .£I2OO, which at tho present time is represented by,two mortgages. In addition to this the board expect to receive X6OO from the Government by way of subsidy of 10s in the «£l. At yesterday's meeting of tho Hospital Board the question of the mortgages was raised, members desiring to know whether they were of a satisfactory nature, and whether they should b© renewed. Mr R. C. Kirk said it had not been definitely decided what form the permanent memorial should take. There was a sum of money coming to the board, and there would 100 a subsidy as well, and it was a matter for the board to consider.. He thought they could not do better than invest the amount with the subsidy on mofgage from which they would receive something like £7O or .£BO a year. This sum could be spent in extras and special improvements outside the board's ordinary funds. Such a scheme would certainly be a lasting memorial; and the money coming in annually for extras would be .a very great boon. The chairman (Mr C. J. Crawford): Would you recommend a renewal of the present mortgages? Mr Kirk said he would recommend a renewal if the mortgages were suitable. He thought the matter might be left to a small committee, included in which there should bo a valuer. The chairman moved that a small committee be set up with power to act. This was carried. Messrs R. C. Kirk and M. Murdoch being appointed the committee, the latter to act as valuer. Mr Kirk said he did not think they should decide upon the permanent form the memorial should take until the board again met. The chairman: Tf the mortgage is renewed that practically commits the board. What is the term —three years? Mr Kirk: Longer. The chairman: I suppose that will have to be gone into. * ■ Mr Crawford said personally it would h'* fi ereat blunder to tak« the money and sp'Mirt it on any particular thing. ]> should be k°pt for nil time in tb* nam o of good lady -who had givr-r. it. and that would go n long rr?>y towards prison ragin'* pfor>V. rdtr. cprh "jffs.
