CHARITABLE AID
MEETING OF THE BOARD. The Wellington and Wairarapa Charitable Aid Board met yesterday. Present; Messrs R. C. Kirk (in the chair), D. McLaren, W. H. Morrah, F. Cohen, and A. Colee. Tho Mauriccville County Council wrote replying to the Board’s request for an explanation of several items of tho Council's expenditure in charitable aid. The Council found it impossible to draw a hard and fixed line in regard to the nature and quality, of articles to be supplied by the storekeepers, as the circumstances of each applicant had to be considered. The Council was practically tho agent of the Board in relieving poverty, and it did not seem unreasonable to expect from it some guidance and suggestion rather than only adverse criticism when applying for a refund of moneys advanced in carrying out such duties.—lt was decided that the Board’s inspector should visit Mauriceville and explain matters, a ration list in the meantime, to bo drawn up and distributed to all local bodies dispensing charitable aid. The bank-book showed a credit balance of JC1283 13s 7d, and a subsidy of ,£3431 17s 5d was due. Accounts amounting to J 5772 4s 3d were passed for payment.
