The Union Company's harbour tug Nalon% was placed on the patent slip at Wellington yesterday morning for a painting and general overhaul. She is to be brought off the cradle in a couple of days.

The Magisterial Inquiry into the collision between the Steamers Gertie and Penguin in Cook Strait recently will 'probably bo held in about ten days. The Canopus discharged part cargo of coal into the Encounter yesterday, and as soon as the balance is discharged she will leave here to-day for Westport. The Canopus is to load again for here, and is due tack about Friday. Captain K. Stewart resumed command of the Penguin yesterday, and Captain Naylor went as chief officer in place of Mr Roberts, who joins the Maori as acting-second officer. The Federal-Houlder-Shire liner Oswestry Grange will discharge a large quantity of rails at Wellington. She will leave here on Thursday or Friday for Lyttelton and Dunedin with balance of cargo from Manchester. Speaking to .a "Times" reporter the passengers ed themselves as delighted with the voyage out from Home, everything having been done to make the trip enjoyable. The Tyser Company's steamer Whakarua, from London, via Australia, Auckland, and Napier, is expected to arrive hero next Thursday. Mr H. W. Platts has joined the Kamona as acting-master in place of Mr J. Flynn, who resumes his position as chief officer.

The Maoriland Steamship Company’s steamer Ennerdale arrived at Kaipara yesterday morning. The vessel 1 is expected to leave there on Sunday for Sydney. .

The New Zealand Shipping Company advise that the Tongariro, which is due here to-morrow from Lyttelton for Homeward loading, is to leave Wellington on Friday for Napier and Auckland. The departure of the lonic from Wellington for Lyttelton has been postponed till midday to-morrow. Th© Union Company-was advised that the Kittawa left Westport at 4 a.m. yesterday for Greymouth. The Kaitangata was to have left Westport last night for Wellington, but it was doubtful whether she could get out. The Alanaroa, which left Wellington last evening for Alotueka, was unable to make ahv headway against the strong

north-westerly and heavy sea after getting about five mile.- pa-t Karori Rock. As she wa* lightly loaded, the Manaroa put back to port. The Torgauten was to have left Wo>f_ port at -4 p.m. yesterday for M anganui with a load of coal. The vessel is to proceed from Wanganui to Picton to load produce for Onehunga, and at Onehunga she will load timber for Wellington.

Advice was received yesterday that the collier Regulus was detained at Wanganui yesterday, as she required three firemen and two A.B.'s. She is to leave there to-night for Westport.

ATHENIC LEAVES CAPETOWN. The Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s steamer Athenic, which left Plymouth on August 22nd for Wellington, via Capetown and Hobart, resumed her voyage from Capetown on last Friday evening. The vessel is one day ahead of schedule time, MAORI LEAVES LIVERPOOL. The Shaw% Savill and Albion Company’s steamer Maori sailed from Liverpool on the sth instant for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Port Chalmers. The vessel is due at Wellington about November Gth. THE SYDNEY BOAT. Tlio Union Company’s steamer Alaitai, which is due at vVeilingtou to-morrow evening from Sydney direct, is bringing 21 saloon and 50 steerage jmssengers booked for Wellington. THE ARAHURA. The Union Company’s steamer Arahura arrived at Greymouth at 11 o’clock yesterday morning from Wellington, via IK>rts. The Union Company was advised that there was an increasing sea on the bar, but it was hoped that the Araliura would bo able to leave Greymouth at II o’clock last night on the return trip. The vessel is time-tabled to leave Nelson at X p.m. to-morrow and Picton at 7 p.m. for Wellington, where she should arrive about 11 o’clock to-morrow night. MISHAP TO AOREEE. Whilst the coastal steamer Aorere was leaving Patea on Sunday morning her propeller struck a log or other partially submerged obstacle, whicli snapped one of the blades right off. The Aorere was placed on the patent slip yesterday, and an examination showed that the other blades and boss were undamaged. A spare blade was fitted, and the Aorere will be relaunched this morning. NEW ZEALAND-CANADIAN LINE. Messrs Johnston and Co., agents for the New’ Zealand-Canadiau Line, are advised that the steamer Indravelli sailed from Vancouver on the 3rd instant for Suva, Auckland and Wellington, The Indravelli is expected to arrive here about the 30th instant. I INVERTAY DUE TO-MORROW. The cargo steamer Invertay'left Auckland at daybreak on Sunday for Wellington with part cargo of case oils for this port. Sho is due here early to-mor-row. The Vacuum Oil Company are the agents. WAIKAEE-KAIPAEA BUMP. The Collector of Customs held a preliminary inquiry at Wellington yesterdar concerning the collision at the wharf last Tuesday, when the Waikare bumped the Kaipara. The master, first officer, second officer, and quartermaster of the Waikare gave evidence. The Collector of Customs at Picton forwarded to the Marine Department yesterday the evidence of the officers of the Kaipara, now awaiting orders at Picton. The whole of the evidence is under the consideration of the Marine Department.

THE NORFOLK COMMENCES. The Federal-Houlder-Shire liner Norfolk left Port Chalmers at 1 p.m. yesterday for the Bluff to commence her round of loading ports for Avonmoutli. She is timed to leave the Bluff to-morrow for Lyttelton, from which port the vessel is due at Wellington on Sunday next. The Norfolk will leave here on the 24th instant for Avonmouth, Alanchester, Liverpool and Glasgow. THE HULK BLACKWALL. LEAVES LYTTELTON TO-DAY FOR WELLING TON. The Lyttelton Harbour Board’s tug Canterbury leaves Lyttelton at 6 o’clock this morning to tow the Blackball Coal Company’s- hulk Blaokwall to Wellington. In accprdanco with th© requirements of the Marine Department, the Blaokwall will be manned by a crew of nine men—a master and engineer (to attend to the boiler in case of steam being required for the winches) and seven able seamen. Captain 11. Dillner, an Experienced navigator, and an old and trusted servant of tbe Blackball Coal Company, will have command of th© BlackwaJi for the trip. Mr M. J. Miller, of Lyttelton, will also make the passage to Wellington, where, after arranging for the putting in of a new foremast, with the necessary derricks and gear, and three more steam winches, he will be finished with thd old Blackwall. He states th© hulk is now in such good condition that she will do another twenty years’ service. The Blackwall is carrying a lifeboat and supply of lifebelts, and a month’s provisions, chiefly preserved meats and other tinned foods. She has been jurytigged, and will have a fair spread of canvas, a jib, a staysail, and a trysail. so tbat full provision has bden made : for all emergencies.
