The origin of this custom dates back to the year 1690, when a -wealthy French baron named Pavart died and bequeathed a legacy to the Protestant Church in that town, on the understanding that every year a clergyman selected from among th«*e holding the livings in the dioceso should preach a short sermon extolling the good deeds of the deceased baron.
