CHALLENGE CUP FINAL DRAWN. SWIFTS r. WANDERERS. The final match for the second division Challenge Cup was played on tho Easin Reserve on Saturday afternoon between Swifts and Wanderers, a rather uninteresting game ending in a draw'. Each side had one goal to its credit at tho call of time. The first spell was especially, tame, neither team seeming at all capable of taking advantage of its opportunities, and at half-time there* was no score. Towards tho end of tho second half tho ball went to Moffat t, who placed a neat goal for Swifts. This remained the only score of tho match till close on time, when Taylor found the net for Wanderers, after a nice forward rush, the scores being thus levelled. For tho last few minutes both sides made determined efforts to score, but without success, tho game ending— Swifts, 1; Wanderers, 1. Mr 11. Waters was referee.
THE BROWN SHIELD. WON BY WELLINGTON. PEES 9 ASSOCIATION. DUNEDIN. September 12. Ideal conditions prevailed for the Brown Shield final at Cariebrook ground. The attendance numbered two thousand. Mr H. Mayer, of Wellington, acted as referee. Teams: — » Otago—Knowles, Young, Harrison, Milton, Ratiey, GrenfieW, Clyde, Timlin, Baillio, Ussher, McClelland. Wellington—Oldnail, Roberts, Duignan, Thorley, Taylor, Jackson, Forbes, O'Shea, Gibson, Ash, Reddy. Otago faced a strong sun, which did not trouble Wellington in tho second spell. Otago in tho first spell attacked frequently, encouraging the idea that they would win. McClelland, Usshcr, and Baillio combined successfully, the first-named sending in some beautiful centres and shots and Baiilie using his head judiciously. Oldnail, however, kept his goal superbly. Twenty minutes after the start Reddy screwed in to Gibson, who tricked Otago's backs and scored neatly for Wellington. A free kick to Otago was put in by Young, and a judicious place by Ratiey produced a scramble in front of tho Wellington goal. Baiilie gathered in smartly, and drove hard and low into the net, drawing the scores even. One minute before half-time weak play by Harrison allowed a chance to Ash, whose sharp shot glanced off Young's foot into the net. Wellington, 2; Otago, 1. In the second spell ‘Wellington showed marked .superiority all round. Superiority in weight and training, and experience in “shepherding” gave them an advantage over the smaller Otago men, who played poorly, being quite outclass* cd. Early in the spoil Milton placed in to Baiilie, who hooked into goal, S?f re it Ussllcr beaded splendidly .past Oldnail, making the. scores 2 all. Soon after good work by Forbes placed the bail at the to© of Ash. whose ground shot found tho net, Wellington leading by one goal. Just before time O'Shea steadied, and with a swinging left-foot drive scored Wellington’s fourth and final goal.
The visiting team were entertained by Otago at a smoker, at which the shield was presented to Wellington bv the Mayor of Dunedin.
