ACCIDENTS.

FATAL MISHAP ON THE lONIC. A CARGO-WORKER CRUSHED. Charles Nevis, a cargo-worker, married, with, a family, living at Kelburne, died from injuries received in the hold of the lonio at 7 o'clock on Saturday morning. An inquest was held by Dr A. McArthur, Coroner, at the hospital. It transpired that deceased was quo of a gang of live men who were working cargo. He was steadying a sling containing two slabs of asbestos when the load canted, crushing him against an iron column. He was immediately released by the swinging of the sling, and was not knocked clown. His mates concerned about him, but to their inquiries he replied, "I'm not much hurt." Ward, the head stevedore, also inquired if ho required assistance,, but the deceased said, "No, thanks. I’m all right, and without assistance climbed the ladder to the deck, a distance of forty-three feet, A doctor who was called to see the deceased, could not, from the necessarily superficial examination, fee© any serious injury, and deceased was eent to his home. Ho was quite cheerful, and said to his friends, "Oh, I'll be all right in a couple of hours." Intense pain supervening, he was sent to the district hospital, where the medical authorities found that the injuries were so severe that an operation would probably hasten death. There was a rupture extending two-thirds of the distance across the stomach. If was shown that the deceased must shortly before the accident have taken a hearty drink of evater, and the stomach distended. The foreman stevedore said the deceased was a competent and very steady worker. Deceased’s wife and brother-in-law attended the inquest, and gave evidence.
