RIPLE SHOOTING

CONTROL OF WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION. A proposal was brought down bv Major Mclntosh, on behalf of Lieutenant-Col-onel Duthie, at the last meeting of the Garrison Officers' Club, that tho garrison officers should take over the control of the Wellington Riflo Association. Major Mclntosh moved in this direction, and the resolution wo* unanimously carried. A proposal was made by Colonel G. F. C. Campbell that tho committee to have control of matters in connection with tne association * shall make arrangements:— (1) That the shooting of all ranks in the volunteer service bo improved and encouraged, as at present tho only persons who receive any encouragement in their companies are a few crack shots (it was pointed out that it was far better to have a whole corps who were average shots than a dozen men in a corps who were crack riflemen). (2) That rifle shooting be altered so that the men shoot as nearly ns possible under active service conditions.

Colonel Campbell explained that under present conditions there was no real interest and little skill, because shooting was confined to a minority of men in any corps, The men should be taught firing under service conditions. They should be taught to judge distances quickly and accurately. At present wrong principles were followed in regard competitive shooting, lie hoped that under new management the Wellington Kifle Association would improve shooting among the whole of the volunteer force, making real efficiency general.
