Consequent upon delay in tho South Island tiie departure of the Union Company's steamer Moana, from Wellington for East Coast ports, Auckland, and Sydney, has been postponed till 5 o'clock to-day. The Union Glmpany's turbine steamer Maori, which dropped out of the running at Lyttelton yesterday for an overhaul, will remain at Lyttelton for about a •week, when she will resume running in the Wellington-Lyttelton service. . Captain Chas. McArthur, of the firm of McArthur and Hull, who has been on a visit to Timaru, returned to Wellington by the Mararoa yesterday. The Union Company received advice that the Mapourika arrived at Westport at 10 a.m. yesterday from Wellington and Nelson. She was unable to cross out for Greymouth on the morning tide, but was expected to have sailed for Greymouth at 9 o'clock last night. The Tyser liner Hawke's Bay is to get away from Wellington to-morrow afternoon for Lyttelton and Port Chalmers. The Maoriland Steamship Company's steamer Ennerdale left Napier last night for Wellington to load her bunkers here. She is to sail at noon to-morrow for Kaipara to load timber for Sydney. The Ennerdale will subsequently load at Newcastle foe Auckland.

Tho westerly gales are considerably affecting West Coast bars, and the. bar at Greymouth yesterday could not be negotiated. The Kini, for Lyttelton, the Kotuku for Timaru, and the Rosamond for Wellington .were detained at Greymouth.

Mr Anderson, formerly of tho Wakatu, is to join the Torgauten as chief officer at Foxton. Mr Clark, the chief officer of the Torgauten, will come to Wellington for orders.

The barquentine Silver Cloud, which left Sydney on August 30th for Auckland,. passed Cape Maria yesterday, with her main topsail badly torn. The Federal-Houlder-Shire' liner Rip. pingham Grange, which is due at Wellington about Wednesday next from Liverpool direct, is bringing a total of 5000 tons of cargo for New Zealand ports. The vessel will discharge 1877 tons at Wellington. RUAPEHU ARRIVES HOME. The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Ruapehu, which left Wellington on July 30th for London, arrived at Plymouth on Tuesday, She made a smart passage of 40 days—which is. two days ahead of schedule time. MARAROA BEHIND TIME. The Union Company's steamer Mararoa was two hours Into yesterday morning on the run up from Lyttelton. She has just received an overhaul in the Port Chalmers dock, but her machinery was not running as well as it should, and the engines were slowed down at 3 a.m. yesterday,' On arrival at Wellington a diver inspected the propeller, but found it to be in good order. DULWICH BRINGS OREGON. The steamer Dulwich, which arrived at Lyttelton yesterday from Victoria, 8.C., via Dunedin, brought a cargo of 2,056,000 feet of Oregon pine, a large quantity of it being carried on deck. The vessel landed about 350,000 feet at Dunedin. The Dulwich has about $50,000 feet of

timber to land at Lyttelton, the balance of her cargo being consigned to Wellington. Since leaving Lyttelton about six months ago the Dulwich has made an extended tour of the Pacific Ocean. She loaded coal at Sydney for Guay mao (Mexico), and thence proceeded to Puget Sound, where she shipped her present cargo. The Dulwich carries white of- ‘ Leers and a Chinese crew. Referring to the latter. Captain Dudley reports that ( lor three-year engagements, such as the Dulwich is engaged in, a Chinese crow is the only one which will keep to a ship for that length of time, and under the circumstances he finds the Chinese very efficient and satisfactory. WAITEMATA, FROM NEWCASTLE. The Union Company's cargo steamer I Waitemata arrived at Wellington yesterday morning Horn Newcastle after a ; smart run of five days. The vessel will i discharge pan caigo here, and is ex-; pected to sail to-morrow for Timaru and i Oamaru with balance of cargo. Un discmirge at Melbourne tho steamer proceeded lo bydney, and felt lor Auckland on. Thursday tho 3rd instant, meeting with fine weather on the passage. THE OTAKI. Of the New Zealand Shipping Company's new cargo boat Otakx our London correspondent writes on July 31st: — "In marine engineering, public interest appeal’s for tiie moment to centre in the vessel for tho New Zealand Shipping Company, which is on the stocks at u unibarton. This is a large vessel intended for cargo business purely. On her outward voyage to New Zealand she goes by the Cape of Good Hope, and on the Homeward voyage by Cape Horn, so that her distinction will be to bo the first vessel with turbines to make a circuit of the world. Of course, she is not a turbine in tho sense that the Lusitania or the Carraania or the Virginian is. Her designed speed is no more than thirteen knots, and the object of combining in her the reciprocating engine and the turbine is to secure economy in steam. There will be three propellers Those on the wings will bo driven by triple expansion engines, which wib exhaust into a low-pressure turbine on the centre shaft. Exactly there is where the economy of the Parsons engine comes in, for it can make effective uso of steam at far below tho pressure necessary to the piston engine. The biggest of the combination of the kind which are is that on the Dominion liner on the stocks at Harland and Wolff's, Belfast, but the most interesting is perhaps that on the yacht Emerald, which originally was driven by steam turbine alone. The Emerald was, bj the way, the first turbine vessel to cross the Atlantic." EIPPINGHA'M grange. PASSENGERS FROM LIVERPOOL.
