MITCHELLTOWN SCHOOL

There was a considerable gathering of interested friends at the Mitchelltcwn School yesterday afternoon and ove-ning. Mr Darroch, the headmaster, anxious to raise sufficient funds for tho extension of the playground, .has a.pproached business people and others, and these having generously responded, there was a creditable display of goods for sale.' The present playground for the 160 pupils who attend tho school is a triangular piece of ground less -than one-sixteenth of an aero in extent. The City Council granted the School Committee the use of a neighbouring gully (the country is extremely precipitous), and with commendable enterprise the committee has boon filling up this ground, and will continue to do so until a playground of about 1J acres is available. The ground being Town -Belt, tho enterprise of the School Committee, which intends to asphalt and fence this area, will give the publb a new reserve, although it is obvious that the ground will bo more largely used by children of the school than tho adults of tho district. Already a City Council grant of £25 has bee.i ma-Jo, and last year a similar salo of work to the ono held yesterday helped matters somewhat. 11. is to be noted that those people whose children attend the Mitchelltown School aro not rich, but they are helpful and enthusiastic in the matter of a larger playground. All the edibles and so on were provided yesterday by the parents of the children. It is believed that the Education Board may donate a sum towards the work that is still necessary to be done to make a good playground available. That the playground is needed there is no doubt.
