AN INTERESTING RELIC

A LOCK OF NELSON'S HAIR. A short length of plaited, reddishbrown hair, enclosed in a round engraved brass box—such is the supposed Nelson relic which has just come so singularly to light in the little Scots village of Kirkpatrick, Closeburn, Dumfriesshire. The box has apparently lain forgotten for many years at the back of a press in a horse-dealer's cottage at kirkpatrick, and narrowly escaped being thrown away as rubbish with other odds and ends when turned out recently during some renovations. It is an inch deep and rather over two inches' broad, the plait of hair, which fits it exactly being about six inches long. The box is inscribed: "Conqueror at Aboukir, 1 Aug. 1793. Copenhagen, 2 April 1801. Trafalgar, 21 Oct. 1805. where he gloriously fell." The belief is entertained that tho hair in the box is that of the great Admiral, and inquiries have certainly tended to explain the occurrence of the find in such a locality. »
