News from Rarotonga, under date April 2nd, shows that the month ol March last holds the roomd i»r 1 ;! 1 £ greatest amount of rain in one month for past years, a total of l—.Alin havm 0 fallen in eighteen days, with a maximum of 3.C3in in one day. Iho average for the month of March in the last ten years is S.Ooin. The total rainfall foi tho first three months ot tho present, year is 32.4 din, as against an average of 28.83 in for the previous ten years. On March lath and Ifith Rarotonga was visited by a severe northerly gale, the barometer falling to 29.i1. Iho wind was accompanied by a high sea, which roiled into the harbours. The schooner Vaite, which was moored in Avatiu harbour, was for some time in dafigor of drifting from her moor mgs and going ashore, but luckily her wire ropes held. Tho mean of the barometer for the month was 29.856 in. The mean thermometer readings were as follows: Mean maximum 82dcg, mean minimum 73,4 deg.
