DEVELOPMENT OF COAL MEASURES MASTERTON RACING CLUB. (From Our Own Correspondent.) MASTERTON, April 13. A public meeting was held at Masterton to-night to discuss tho development of the Mauriceville coal measures. Messrs F, W. Hummer and C. Hoflems, on whoso Mauriceville properties coal had been found, were present. It was decided to postpone action for three weeks until further information had been procured regarding the cost of uso of Government drills. The first race flown by the newly-form-ed Master ton. Homing Pigeon Club tcok place on Saturday. Sis birds were sent by the morning train to Woodville, and there liberated by the etationmaeter at 12.3 p.m. The first bird to arrive was Mr H. E. Bi'liugton’s Westmere, which reached its loft at 2.7 p.m. The second arrival was Mr H. L. Pickett s Black Prince, 2rain later, and the third was another bird belonging to Mr Billington, South Star. which arrived about a minute later than Mr Pickett s. The air-line distance is about 46-J miles and the velocity of the winning bird was, roughly, 676yds per minute. Contrary winds retarded flight. The next match will be flown, from Dannevirke. The annual meeting of parishioners rf St. Matthew's Church will be held on April 29th. The meeting will take tho form of a farewell "social" to the Rev. A. M. Johnson, who is leaving Masterton to take charge of St. Mark’s, Wellington, while a welcome will also be given to the Rev. Wateon, tho new vicar. At a meeting of stewards of the Masterfcon Racing Club, the secretary submitted a balance-sheet in connection with the recent meeting, which showed a credit balance of .£l3l 3s Bd. Messrs C. F. Vallance, J. Macara, C. A. Pownall. J. Cress, and O. C. Cooper were appointed a committee to report on the improvement of the course, Tho following resolution has been passed by the Cross Creek branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway servants:—* That this meeting regrets tho action of a majority of the conference delegates in dispensing with the services of Mr J. T. M. Hornsby os editor of the "Railway Review," and further, that the valuable services rendered by Mr Hornsby during his term as editor be placed on record. The Featherston Dairy Company will exhibit cheese at the Winter Show at Palmerston. Mr Arthur Tooker, of Featherston, intends visiting England shortly. A case of scarlet fever has occurred at Dalefleld, and been reported to the health authorities. The old wooden kerbing in High street, Carterton, is now being pulled up, end will be replaced by a kerbing of concrete. All the boulders to b© crushed in connection with the street improvements at Carterton are being taken from tho Taratahi plains.
