General - complaint is made by practl cally the whole of the grain nnd pro. dnoe merchants in Dnnedm at what they oonsidor the totally inadequate ship, ping sendee between, this port and northern ports. It appears that there is an exceptionally heavy demand from the north for wheat, oats, potatoes, chaff, and hay, and while northern buyers are clamouring for supplies Dunedin merchants cannot get. boats to tahe shipments airtjy. Merchants complain that for the last three weeks enormous quantities of produce has been left on the wharf.
The shipping companies concerned—the Union Company and tho HnddartParker Company—assert that everything possible has been done to oopo with the exceptionally heavy trade. Pressure has been felt at other ports, and the demand for space on boats has been very neavy. They anticipate that the coming week will see everything cleared awav and provision made for the die. patch of 1000 tons ofgrain by the Wimmera on Tuesday. The company expect to clear by this Wit everything offering. If any cargo is shut out it will be hay and chaff.
