Verdi’s Opera 11 La Traviata” is based upon a well-known play by Alexandra Dumas, “La Dame aux Camillas,” and was produced at Venice in 1853. The first Act is brought to an end with the aria “Ah fors e lui,” Jj sung by the heroine Violetta, and in I its original form it falls into two well- | worked sections which are preceded and I divided by recitatives. . The first is founded upon an expressive melody accompanied by short chords for orchestra which is in turn succeeded by a graceful refrain, while the concluding portion takes the form of a brilliant waltz movement interrupted towards the finish by short phrases sung in the distance by Alfredo Garment, Violetta’s Lover. The aria has always been rebognised as a very effective medium for the display of the vocalist’s art, and as ’ such has long since established itself as part and parcel of every coloratura singer’s rdpertoire.
