AN INCREDIBLE STORY
SERIOUS CHARGE DISMISSED. PRESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, April 9. Mr Kettle, S.M., gave his reserved decision this morning in the case against Richard Dyason, chief officer of the steamer Navua, who was charged with having on Suuday evening, March 29th, attempted a criminal assault on Florence Callaghan, aged 23. The magistrate said the girl’s story as to Dyason having dragged her to his cabin, struggling and resisting, was quite beyond credit. Tho night was calm, and there was nothing to prevent cries of distress being heard by many people near the vessel. If her evidence so far was so grossly exaggerated, no jury of reasonable men would bo justified in accepting her statement as to what took place in tho mate’s cabin- She bore no sign of a struggle, and absolutely refused to submit tc medical examination. The case was dismissed.
