FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. WORKS AND REQUIREMENTS. Tho City' Council met last night. Present: Hon. T. W. Hislop (Mayor), Coun-, cillors Luke, Smith, Cohon. Ballinger, Hales, Shirtcliiic, Fisher, M.P.. liws, Fletcher, Carmichael, McLaren, Ilmdnuirah, and Aiorrah. RESERVES, ETC. The Baths and City Reserves Committee recommended : That the lease of section 21 Town Belt be transferred from Airs Bcu to her son, Mr R. Bcu. That H post and wire fence bo erected round the custodian's cottage at Newtown Park', and that shrubs bo planted inside such fence-..

That Mr W. Dok*m, custodian of tlje Basin Reserve, be granted a month’s i(*vc of absence.

That the necereary repairs be effected to the custodian’s cottage at the Botanical Gardens.

Tli*it account* amounting to <£2s Os 9d be pa*ed for payment. The committee also reported that they have under review the question of the wages received by the'reserves staff, and the custodians of the baths, and have to recommend that tho following increases in wage© be granted : —G. While, sexton Bolton street cemetery, from 8s Gd to Os per day; W. Dobson, custodian Basin Reserve, from X2 Os to XS per week, without light allowance; Brewer, custodian Newtown Park, <£3 per wee): and residence; John Heath, custodian Nairn street reserve, and othe.rs, from 8s 6d to Os per day; A. Wilton and wife, custodians To Aro baths, from <£lsG to X 175 per annum; A. Firth and wife, custodians Thorndon Baths, from <£io< r > to .£l3O per annum. Tho-committee will report to th© next meeting of tho Council with reference to the position of custodian at the Botancial Gardens and Queen's Park. In connection with th© reserve© etau, the committee have to recommend that tho superintendent of reserve© bo given power to engage or suspend men, imd in the event of his suspending any employe© he shall report same to the chairman of tho committee immediately. That they have been in consultation with the City Solicitor, who has prepared a draft bill dealing with th© leasing of portions of the Town Belt and reserves to sports clubs for the purposes of forming sports grounds, and he hao submitted tho same to the committee. Th© committee submit herewith the document, and ask to be Authorised to take the necessary stops to obtain legislative power to give effect to the same. The proposed increase© in salaries were deferred until the estimates are dealt with. With- this amendment the report v.*ds adopted. BY-LAWS AND LIGHTING.

The By-laws and Street-lighting Committee recommended: That tho application of Mr A. Bell for a permit to erect a building at Rmtout street be granted, on the conditions recommended by the City Engineer. That the application of Messrs Atkinson and Bcnnet, on behalf of Mrs Brown, for the consent of the Council to a i igbt-of-way to her property at Abel Smith street, bo granted during the existence of her house, and only during Mrs Brown’s life-time. That a plumbing account of 15s. incurred by Mr' J. E. Anderson,® in connection with a blocked corporation sewer at Barker street, be passed for payment. Adopted. EIRE BRIGADES.

The Eire Brigades Committee reportC "That it has appointed Councillor Ballinger chairman of the committee. That it has accepted the tender cf tho Wellington Woollen Company for tho supply of Eire Brigade uniforms fer the year 1808-9. That an additional 1000 ft of fire-hose be purchased from the Napier Fire Brigade Supplies Company, as recommended by the ■ Superintendent of Fire Brigade. The Libraries Committee recommended: J i

Tho Power Stations and Tramways Committee recommended:

That the usual Sunday tramway service bo run on Good Friday. That tenders be called for the supply of sixty-one transfoimers, as recommended by the Electrical Tramways Engineer.
