NATAL'S COAL OUTPUT
The recent colliery disaster at- Glencoe, Natal, serves/to remind one that th©'“Garden Colony” is now to' be reckoned among the coal-producing-countries of the world. The latest figures-show that the amount raised-during ISO 7 was 1,530,000 tons. ‘ Over sixty years ago the Secretary -of State for the Colonies'drew the ■ attention of Sir George .Napier, then Governor of tho Colony, to the value of Natal’s coal deposits, and .dwelt on- the Utmost importance of . the supply to *M:eam navigation in th© adjacent seas." Over 7,000 hands are employed at th© mine®, of whom 40T are whites. As the coal consists mainly of surface deposits non© of the shafts are more than 200 ft. in depth. Recently a trad© ha® sprung up with America and India.
