OUTBREAK OF FIRE

A HOUSE DESTROYED THIS MORNING.

By a fire which broke out at about a quarter past one this morning a twostoried ten-roomed house in Boulqptt terrace, owned by Mr Wyett, of Andrews and Wyott. was practically destroyed. Mr A. Webb, a friend of the owner, who was sleeping, upstairs, and the only one in the place, said that when he retired at midnight tho house seemed quite safe; when he woke up soon after one it was full of smoke. As the staircase was ablaze he was unable to moke good his departure that way, but had to escape by mease of the balcony. By the time tho fire brigade arrived the flames had a good hold, and it was not long before tho whole place was gutted.

The house was in the hands of painters and decorators for an overhaul. Neither gas no oleotric light was fitted, and the cause of tho outbreak is unknown. Fortunately there was no wind or places adjoining and higher up the hill would have been in great danger.
