ALLEGED INCENDIARISM
AN OLD MAN ON TRIAL.
FEESS ASSOCIATION. AUCKLAND, April 9. Thomas Fitzgerald, the old man charged with incendiarism in connection with the two outbreaks of hre last month at the residence of Mr Leo. Myers, was brought up again at the Police Court this morning, after several remands for medical attention. Mr Myers said that he had left Fitzgerald, in whom he had the greatest confidence, to take care of his house. The man had been in his employment for five or six years, and was most trustworthy. He was quite unable to imagine what motive Fitzgerald could have had for setting the place on fire, as he oould not receive the slightest benefit.
A statement was read by a detective, in which accused admitted having set fire to the place on two occasions. He therein described how he had sprinkled the walls with kerosene and gathered debris together. The only reason accused had given was that he must have been mad at the time.
Fitzgerald, who pleaded not guilty, was committed to the Supreme Court for trial, bail being refused.
