BRITISH TRADE UNIONS.
A RECORD YEAR. A White Paper issued during Pcbraary states the total membership of IEOS for Groat Britain and Ireland of 615 Trade Unions ivhich furnished returns was 1,719,031. Their income amounted to £2,7C9,655 end their expenditure to £2,283,230, while the balance of funds at the end of the year amounted to £3 864,343. The figures for ISOS, compared with those for the previous year, show an increase in membership ol 151513 or 9.7 per cent; an increase' in income of £152,483, and a decrease in expenditure of <£222,794. During the year 1906 the income exceeded the expenditure by <£433,435, and tlio balance of funds at the close of the year amounted to nearly six millions sterling, a sum exceeding that of any previous year. The average gross income per member was 31s 6d and the amonint > of funds per member £3 8s 3d. _ In view of the present engineering dispute on the North-cast coast it is interesting to note that the membership of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers in 1900 van nearly 105,000. that the funds on December 31st of that year amounted to £723,075, and that the income for the year was £400,700 and the expenditure £413,084.
