SHOW AT LEVIN

PINE DISPLAY OF FEUIT. PBBSB ASSOCIATION. . PALMERSTON, April 8. The Levin Horticultural Society held its fourth annual autumn show jesterday at Levin. There is, no doubt that this year's event excels all its predecessors both in the quality and quantity of the entries. The exhibition proved beyond cavil the productiveness of the soil of Levin and its surroundings for the cultivation of fruit and vegetables of a high standard. The show was opened by the Mayor (Mr Gardener). He referred to the steady increase in the size and importance of the society’s exhibitions. Mr J. Prouse, president of the society, also spoke. THE EXHIBITS.

An outstanding feature of tho show was the display of fruit, particularly of apples, which were arranged on a sixfoot table which reached from end to end of the main hall. This display included all the best _ commercial varieties, the quality of which was evident even to the uninitiated. A good exhibition was also made in the vegetable classes, though in this department it was obvious that the dry season had to some extent militated against the standard. The horticultural section was well supplied with entries, though the exhibits for competition in this section were chiefly of a decorative nature. There was a remarkably fine exhibition of cookery, fancy and plain. Asked as to his opinion of the fruit exhibit, of which he was judge, Mr Thomas Horton, the well-known horticulturist, said he considered the display of apples was tho finest he had seen in New Zealand. The exhibit showed that tho settlers had been careful in their selection of the best commercial varieties. He was also impressed with the staging of the fruit _ exhibits, which were arranged artistically in five varieties in place of the usual six varieties. Exhibits from the experimental farms, which attracted much attention, included a fine array of fruit and vegetables, sheaves of corn, specimens of grasses, and an apparatus for bee culture. There was also a fine exhibit of vegetables from the Weraroa boys’ training farm. SOME PBIZE WINNERS.
