Mr Ernest Short, tho well-known breeder and importer of Romney Marsh sheep, has decided to giro the Government the first refusal of Paroraugi, his freehold estate of £SOO acres at Waituna, sixteen miles from Feilding. Should the Government not accept the offer, the property will be sold by auction. DEATHS FROM ‘HEART DISEASE. DUNEDIN, April 6. William Tizard, winchman on the Hartley and Riley dredge, dropped dead on Saturday night of heart disease. John Maxwell, aged 55, dropped dead this morning while at work. He had been employed at the city gasworks, and had been under medical treatment for heart disease. TRAMWAYS FOB WANGANUI. WANGANUI, April 6. The contractors have made a start with the construction of the tramways contract, the price being £40,000 odd. The question of an extension to the sea beach, at a cost of £27,000 is nowbeing considered. WANGANUI’S., TRADE. WANGANUI, April 6. The total exports from Wanganui for oversea ports for tho year ending March last are valued at £403,873, an increase of £19,000 over the previous year. Of this, wool (38,000 tons) contributed £300,000, and frozen meat £64,000. The imports for tho year were £235,000, as against £183,000 the previous year. The Customs receipts totalled £82,000, being a substantial increase over the previous year, notwithstanding the largo reductions in duties. GISBORNE WATERWORKS. GISBORNE, April 6. A meeting of the ■ Borough Council discussed with the engineer the position of . the waterworks pipe-line damaged by the recent flood. It was stated that the damage was not nearly so extensive as at first reported. The council passed a resolution calling on the contractors to repair the damage and complete the contract with as little delay as possible.

The proposed chemists’ conference is not exciting much interest among tho profession in Auckland, it being ccrsideied that th© Pharmacy Board can do and is doing all that can he dene in regard to having grievances remedied. At the same time, the opinion is held that the conference may serve to bring to light matters that are affecting chemists prejudicially, but which have nothing to do with the board.

A RELIC FROM THE SEA. AUCKLAND. April 6

On December 28tli last the captain of tho steamer Chelmsford picked up in Torangaranga Bay a ship’s buoy which had evidently been in the water for some considerable time as it was coated with barnacles. The name Alstomiso. however, could bo just discerned. The Collector of Customs informed the German Consul (Mr Carl Seegner) of the occurrence, and tho latter gentleman communicated with Germany wit-li a view to unravelling tho mystery. Mr Seegner has now received a communication from the owners of the Alsternixe, a full rigged ship, in which they state that she left Callao on November 26th, 1906, for Sydney heads, hut never reached there. Tha ship was posted as lost in December of last year. CARING FOR CONSUMPTIVES. Auckland, April g. At a meeting of thq Hospital Board to-day, the question of making provision for the oars of consumptives was discussed, and it was agreed that the matter was one of urgency. A special oeromittf e v.as appointed to go into tho whole matter, and it is proposed to then ask the Mayor to convene a public meeting to consider the question, the opinion being held that some of the wealthier citizens will assist financially.
