SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 33. MAGISTRATES’ JURISDICTION . (Before Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M.) POLICE CASES. Far indecency Michael McGi.be was fined .€5, in default fourteen days imprisonment. Joseph Christensen pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly in Customhouse quay, and of resisting a con stable. On the first charge accused was fined 30b, in default fourteen days’ imprisonment, "and on the second charge was sentenced to fourteen days imprisonment, with hard labour.

John McLeod pleaded guilty to being idle and disorderly, without, lawful’ means of support. Accused stated that he had obtained a steamer ticket for Blenheim, where ho was going to look for work. The case was adjourned till Friday next, to allow accused to go to Blenheim. Henry George Hegarty was remanded till'Wednesday next on a charge that between December 10th and February 20th, at Wellington, he did steal £27 13s 4d from his employer, Hindi Hamilton. Bail was allowed, accused in £75 and one surety in £75. liewis Edmund Heckscher, nineteen years old, appeared for sentence for theft of £lO 19s sd, the property of John Chambers and others, on February 19th. _ Chief-Detective McGrath stated that inquiries had been made, but nothing else was known against accused. The whole of tho money had been recovered, through information from accused. Mr Herdman asked for leniency towards accused, who had yielded to a sudden temptation, and almost as quickly repented The manager for John Chambers and Son gave evidence that until the present trouble accused, who had been employed by the firm for about two years, had been a highly satisfactory employee, honest and industrious. His Worship said he did not think accused had any criminal tendencies, and, after reprimanding, him, convicted and ordered him to come up for sentence when called upon.
