HERO OF PORT ARTHUR
SENTENCED TO DEATH RECOMMENDED TO CLEMENCY OE THE CZAR. OTHER GENERALS ACQUITTED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received February 21, 9.17 p.m.) ST. PETERSBURG. February 21. The court-martial which has been trying General Stoesscl and other principal officers concerned in tho surrender of Port Arthur to the Japanese in January, 1905, has delivered its judgment. General Stoossel was condemned to death, but was not deprived of political rights or honour. In view of the heroic defence made by tho Port Arthur garrison, and General Stoessel’s personal bravery, tho Court will ask tho Czar to commute the sentence to ten years’ imprisonment in a fortress. Tho Court reprimanded General Pock, and acquitted Generals Reuss and Smirnoff. COMMENT BY “ THE TIMES.” A CONSPICUOUS FAILURE OF DUTY. LONDON, February 21. “Tho Times,” commetiting on tho result of the trial, says tho condemnation of General Stoessol is deserved, as the General had conspicuously failed in his duty, and lacked tho requisite indomitable moral courage.
