“ALL BLACKS” IN ENGLAND.

MATCH AGAINST WIDNES. PRESS COMMENT ON THE PLAY. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright SYDNEY, November 19. Commenting on tho Widnes match, the “Chronicle” says:—“The New Zealanders’ victory was all tho more creditable as Messenger, Smith, and Todd wore absent. The visitors were the first to become really dangerous, and some pretty work by Kelly ended in Wrigley crossing tho line. He failed at goal. After some midfield play, Wynyard got another grand try, after a splendid run along tho touch-line, Wrigley again failing to convert. “Widnes now showed better form, and brought off several neat passing movements, from ono of .which Davies kicked a goal. Just before the interval Widnes was penalised close in, and Wrigley kicked a goal. The New Zealanders crossed over with a lead of a goal and two tries to a goal and a try. ! “In the second half the New Zealanders showed much better form. Rowe soon broke away, after beating several opponents, and gave to McGregor, who dossed tho line. Wrigley placed a goal from a difficult position. SOME GOOD WORK.

“Then came one of tho beat pieces of play of the match. Davies and Taylor got away, along the touch-line, and after passing and ropassing Taylor got in at tho corner. Davies failed with the kick at goal. “The play of tho colonials was very good, the forwards frequently bringing off bouts of passing, and th© home defence was often in difficulties. From some scrambling play in midfield Rowe picked up, and after a good run passed to Wynyard', who gained a. try.. Wrigley failed to convert. “A fine piece of individual play by Wright followed. Breaking away, Wright ran clean through his opponents and obtained the fifth try. Wright failed to convert. “A mistake by Barber gave IVler a chance, the colonial again crossing the line. Turtill improved tho score. The latter also kicked, a penalty goal. “Just before the finish Taylor obtained a try for Widnes, and th© final scores were;—New Zealand, four goals six tries; Widnes, one goal, three tries.” OTHER CRITICISMS. The “Hail” says:—“The New Zea--1 landers played a great game, which | was always interesting, and at times i absolutely enthralling, but they lost I in their scheme of operations, and at times indulged in fly-kioking, which would have discounted them in the eyes of any critic of the game.” The “Telegraph” says:—“lt was noteworthy, as in previous contests, that tho, colonials were able to claim no( material advantage up to half-time, despite the fact that the blacks had ample opportunities of showing their cleverness in passing and their fine turn of speed. The constant pressure, however, put upon the home defence had its effect in the later stages, when the colonials’ backs scored freely, and altogether gave a fine display.”
