MR COGHLAN IN A NEW ROLE
DEFENDER OF THE COMMONT7EALTH. By Telegraph— Ptmj Association — Copyright LONDON, September 26. Mr T. A. Coghlan, New South Wales Agent-General, in a letter to the “Daily News,” replying to that paper’s recent attack on Australia, says that the annual increase in population has been 2.5 per oentum. This, he adds, is certainly satisfactory, and is likely to be improved in the near future. Eegarding other points in the article, Mr Coghlan adds that the Australian contribution to the solution of great questions has been very considerable, and that great questions are not solved without great men.
A day or two ago, in an article comparing immigration statistics of Canada, the United States, and Australia, tne "Daily News" made a vehement assault on the latter, urging that Australia should “make the increase of her population the basic note of great, enduring States."
