The annual (1906) report of the Chief Inspector of Factories and Workshops is just to hand. We cull therefrom tho following items of general interest: At the end of th© year there were upon the registers 109,065 factories and 446 434 workshops, including laundries, but not men’s workshops, docks, warehouses, private lines or slidmgs, or, in general, domestic workshops. Although the register of men's workshops is still incomplete, there were 23,697 entries of these, a net increase of 4814. The number of works under regulations and special rules has increased by 224. The number of persons employed in factories is approximately a.IoO.UOU; in workshops (excluding men's workshops), 700,000; and in laundries, 400.000. The largo increase of 23,939 in the number of overtime reports in 4UX> was followed by a small increase of 3460 in 4906. A further increase is shown in the number ol children and young peisons presented for employment in factories. The total examined for certificates of fitness was 81,0,869, an increase ol 29,291. ul these 42 613 were half-timers, an increase ol 1453.
