The Parnell Borough Council on Monday night decided to inquire from tn© Thames and Hamilton how those bodies set about getting their library grants from Mr Carnegie. On receipt of the information (says the Auckland “Herald”), the Parnell municipal fathers intend to themselves apply. to the benevolent gentleman > for £3OOO towards a library for their suburb. In the meantime—probably with the idea of being on the safe side—it was agreed to take a poll on a proposal to raise a loan of £2OOO towards the library. The Mount Eden Borough Council also # discussed Carnegie libraries the same Bight* but from a different standpoint. The Finance and Legal Committee recommended that the Ratepayers' _ Association he notified that the council was not prepared to apply to Mr Carnegie for a library. The Mayor said he thought it was detrimental •to any district to apply to Mr Carnegie for a library, and he did not think the council should go begging. Mr Jacka moved, ''That the recommendation be adopted,” and this was carried.
