In the report of the opening of the Island Bay Hall (Mr Keene's), his 'Worship the Mayor is reported to have eaid there was "no public hall in Newtown. ’ He has evidently overlooked the fact that there are two public buildings, which, have been at the disposal of the public at Newtown, and are well known—the Victoria Hail, which haa been in general use for some years past, and a touch larger hall (St. Thomas’s) nort to the Post Office, opened last year.
