In connection with the race across the Atlantic Ocean from Great Britain to New York, between the Cunard Company’s now turbine steamer Lusitania and the same company’s Lucania, fitted with reciprocating engines, the -report of the first day’s run on the former vessel is quit© equal to expectations. In the twenty-four hours the Lusitania steamed 556 nautical miles, or 23 1-6 knots an hour, although her progress was retarded by a fog for five hours. The distance from Liverpool to New York is 3028 miles. A cable message, dated Lon.' don, September Bth, stated that the Lusitania had sailed for New York two and a half hours after the Lucania. It is not dear whether the Laconia wae travelling east or west, but presumably she was leaving New York. The Lusitania is 790 ft long, 88ft in breadth, 80ft in depth to boat deck, and draws 37ft 6in. Her displacement on load draught is' 45,000 tons. The horsepower developed by her turbine engines is 68,000, and the contract speed is 25 knots an hour.
