Tho New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company has received the following cablegram from London under Wednesday's date:—'Tallow—Price has {alien 6d per cwt. The Australian batter freight question remains in an unsettled position, pending tho conference to bo held in Sydney on tho 16th inst. In tho meantime (says tho “Argus”) tho contract between the five steamship lines and the Moares group of Sydney shippers having been "concluded, at tho rates of 2s <x Ecr box by mail steamers and 2s 3d y other steamers, it is, doubtless, to bo expected that the same rates will bo offered by tho steamship lines for Victorian butter. Tho rates are slightly below those asked by the steamship companies a few weeks ago, while they are above those offered by the Victorian Butter Freight Committee, Tho basis of tho contract, is with, tho mail companies and the Whit© Star group iointlT, is not altogether liked from the point “of view of the factories, some of whoso representatives would prefer an arrangement with the mail companies alone, to the extent of their carrying capacity, with a free hand as regards engaging additional freight required by the Whit© Star or- anv other group of steamers. The position, however, j* that tho mail companies and the White Star group, having been brought together, will remain in alliance. The capabilities of the various lines are wellknown, and the main question to be settled, therefore, is that of the rates of freight. _ ~ In their circular to the New South Wales factories about a week ago, Messrs Meares, Throsby, and Brandon referred to'Now Zealand freights as follows; **For a cargo service only (which is apparently not equal to the 'three lines') they (New" Zealand exporters) contracted at 2s 6d per box. Out ot this, we understand, the ocean steamers are paying 3d or 3d per box for the collection oi some of the butter from -smaller ports by coastal boats/' _ New Zealand circumstances differ from Australian, as the extent of coast line renders it possible to collect butter, as aescribed above, by coastal boats, though it would not be worth while for the scean steamers to go to the expense of jailing ot ©very New Zealand port. The jervice via Capo Horn corresponds approximately with the service from Australia via the Ca(pe of Good Hope; while the faster Suez Canal route, - with 1 its heavy dues, is not available for New Zealand cargo. Pending the issue of the necessary "Gazette" notice (says the "Sydney Telegraph") drawback may bo allowed of any duty paid on New Zealand pine in butter boxes exported containing butter. Large stocks of this timber were imported free prior to August Bth, 1907, and much of it has already been mad© into butter boxes for the present ‘ season. The strictest precautions . must therefor© be taken in deciding upon .claims for drawback under this order. It may bo found necessary to inspect the books of the importers and others who handle the timber and the boxes, in addition to obtaining all necessary evidence from the claimant for draw<hack. In ahy case in which it is found that at the time the boxes were mad© the timber was obtained from a person having ft&e And duty paid New Zealand pine in stock together, drawback is to bo refused, unless th© Collector is lutely satisfied that duty paid timber only used in the boxes. It “tnav be assumed that the' above drawback \vill permit of any other sort of boxes made of New Zeahmd pine, sand containing goods > for export ranking "p-arri paesu" with butter boxes. Rabbit crates, for instance, are mostly made of th© same wood, and exporters would like to have this point settled, especially as th© duty now levied amounts bo 2.07 d per crate, and on last year's exports would cost the shippers over XS6OO. That is a' cEango th©y would be quite incapable of getting any recompense for.
