A FINE ARTILLERY RECORD.

The returns dealing with the service class firing of the artillery of the State of New South Wales, which have just been issued, show that the Royal Australian Artillery has now reached a state of proficiency which will be hard to beat. Each of the four companies used the guns they' would have to man in time of war, and when the shooting was done no allowance was made for weather conditions. The whole of the regiment gained a firstclass certificate, with a “figure of merit” which has not been reached by any before in any of the States. The figure of merit of the respective companies was as follow:—No. 4 (Captain Christian), 1.438; No. 1 (Major Osborne), 1.3; No. 2 (Captain CoxTaylor), .891; No. 3 (Major Hawker), .867. In the Australian Garrison Artillery (militia) only one company gained a first-class certificate, namely, No. 1 Company, the other three qualifying as third-class. The shooting of the Australian Field Artillery (militia) was satisfactory, but the instructional cadre (permanent) only managed to get into the second-class. .
