Router’s correspondent at San Francisco states that the small steamer San Pedro, laden with lumber, collided at midnight on Saturday, off Eureka (tiro hundred miles north of San Francisco), in a hoary log, with the steamer Columbia, 3700 tons, carrying numerous Sam Francisco pasaong«rs. 'Rio San Podro struck tho pout bow of tho Columbia, leaving an immense hole in her.
The passengers hurried on deck, whore a wild panic ensued. The Oolumbja sank in five minutes. A life raft which was launched oared n few. Eight persons were saved by clinging to the San Pedro. Lloyds’ agent reports that one hundred passengers were drowned and two hundred saved by a passing steamer. Other accounts giro tho number lout at one hundred and fifty, including the Columbia’s captain. One story states that every woman perished. an irrational verdict. UPSET BY THE FULL COURT. Tho judgment obtained some weeks ogo against tho Sydney “Daily Telegraph" for libelling a candidate for election to Parliament by classifying him as a. “Socialist” has boon set aside by the Full Court. The Chief Justice held that the Judge dm tho Lower Court should have determined that there was no evidence upon which a rational verdict for the plain, tiff oould ho found. ,
