FIRES.

There was a momentary flutter of excitement on Lambton quay last night when a fire was seen inside a hrst-floor window of the Occidental Hotel. Once the flames were blown outside, and in the high northerly wind the position appeared dangerous. Tho alarm was quickly given to the brigade, but in a few seconds tho fire was extinguished by buckets’ of water by people in the hotel. Little was burned besides a pair of curtains. The fire is attributed to children playing with matches. , The fire brigade was called out about 1 o’clock yesterday afternoon. An old shed at No. 35, Adelaide road, had caught fire while rubbish was being burned in an open fireplace. The place was occupied by Frank Leydin, and used as a mattress' factory..
